Cultivating a Climate for Faculty Equity
May 11, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
This is a highly interactive virtual workshop for campus leaders interested in developing a unit climate where all people feel respected, supported, and valued. This workshop focuses specifically on the climate barriers that BIPOC faculty face and offers strategies for dismantling those barriers.
The first segment presents a framework for climate and then reviews research, conducted at U-M and beyond, that highlights the data on the prevalence and impact of negative climate experiences for BIPOC faculty.
The remainder of the workshop is interactive, involving breakout room, large-group, and chat-based activities that address how leaders can actively cultivate more respectful and inclusive climates in their units. Participants will work through climate challenge scenarios that specifically center the needs and experiences of BIPOC faculty.
We encourage previous attendees of a RISE Committee Raising Respect workshop to attend this session, as it contains significantly expanded content and new interactive components that previous attendees will find valuable
Audience: Faculty Leaders (including chairs, associate chairs, directors, grad chairs, DEI leads, executive committee members, faculty governance, and senior faculty) and Senior Staff in Academic Units (including chief administrators, directors, business administrators, and senior managers)
Event notes: This workshop will include live auto-captions. It will not be recorded. Workshop materials and additional resources will be shared with attendees immediately following the event.
Raising Respect is hosted by the U-M ADVANCE Program’s Respect in Striving for Excellence (RISE) Committee, a group of faculty and senior staff that focuses on building respect and inclusion in academic workplace climates.
