Great Lakes Central, Palmer Commons, 4th Floor

Current political realities have caused many members of the higher education community to contemplate their understandings of core academic tenets. These include the meaning of free speech, the limits and possibilities of academic freedom, and the ways that they participate on campus, in classrooms, and in public spaces. This fast-paced session moves fluidly between theatrical scenarios, interactive quizzes, and conversation with Jack Bernard from U-M’s Office of the General Counsel, providing participants with a basis for understanding the role-related boundaries of protected speech. Across the session, participants think together about the contours of the current moment and how they want to participate in civic dialogue.
