Since 2002, the Committee on Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Increase Diversity and Excellence (STRIDE) of the ADVANCE Program at the University of Michigan has been providing information and guidance about best practices that will maximize the likelihood that diverse, well-qualified candidates for faculty positions will be identified, and, if selected for offers, recruited, retained, and promoted at the University of Michigan.

STRIDE leads annual campus-wide workshops for faculty members with an important role in faculty recruitment efforts (e.g., search committee chairs and members, department chairs, and other key faculty). These workshops are designed to provide both background information and concrete advice about practices that make searches more successful in producing diverse candidate pools and in hiring the candidates you wish to attract.

STRIDE often receives requests to visit campuses to share the workshop they have developed in addition to discussing how to develop a similar local campus effort. Because STRIDE’s capacity to accept these requests is limited, we have developed a different way to share STRIDE’s work. This winter the STRIDE Committee will share its advice with a national community of colleagues at a conference to be held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Making STRIDEs: Diversity and Excellence in Faculty Recruiting conference begins at 6 pm on Thursday, January 18, 2018 with a welcome dinner and a CRLT Players theater sketch on “Navigating Departmental Politics”. The conference continues all day on Friday, January 19, ending by 4:30 pm. An agenda can be found at http://advance.umich.edu/makingstridesagenda.php.

The cost for the conference is $500 for the first person and $400 for each additional person, up to 4 people per institution. Dinner on Thursday night and breakfast, lunch, and breaks on Friday are included, as well as all materials. You will need to make your own arrangements for travel and lodging. A list of area hotels will be sent when your registration is received.

To register, please go to this link: Making STRIDEs. Information regarding payment will be sent when registration has been received. Please register by December 1st.

We hope that you will be able to join us in January for what is certain to be a valuable conversation.
